My mother used to put me in a queue while she went up to the front to see what they were queuing for. She came back once and said "It's for blood donors so you can leave the queue now". We queued for everything just in case you needed it. If the queue was for something good mother would join on the back and we would get two lots.

Queues were very polite nobody tried to push in front.

My grandmother bent down to tie her shoelace and when she stood up and turned round a queue had formed behind her. People queued for anything.
